Depending on which of my children you ask, you are very like to be told they are Japanese. Especially Austin, he will argue up and down with you that HE IS JAPANESE!! I guess it's understandable since he lived the first 6 years of his life there (and he's not even 7 yet). :) Our family was so sad to leave Okinawa even though we knew there were very good reasons to come back to the USA to live. The island of Okinawa and the people of Japan have such a deep place in our hearts. To be honest, we long to return there and if it is God's will in a few years we will go back.
My two oldest girls learned quite a bit of Japanese while we lived there, both written and verbal. So that they do not lose those skills we decided to make the investment of continuing their Japanese language skills at a Japanese Saturday school in Virginia. So, every single Saturday morning we rise earlier than we do the entire rest of the week and make the 45 mnute drive to Newport News so they can continue their learning. And they have!! Alycie has mastered the first 2 Japanese alphabets, Hiragana and Katakana and is now working on Kanji. She's even holding a daily class on Hiragana for Austin and Amelia!!! Elizabeth also knows Hiragana and is workign on Katakana. alycia gives her Kanji classes every few days and they're having fun and learning together!
So, if you ask my chidren and they tell you they are Japanese.....perhaps you can understand why.
